I’m a guy that loves climbing rocks (and usually the hard way)!
As ridiculous as that statement may sound to “some”, it’s a sentiment shared by many of the “others”. Others, like myself, that fell in love with a sport and get excited talking about it, sharing our experiences and reliving our epics and pursuits.
Of course, unlike the pioneers of our discipline, we live in an age where we can capture our adventures with a host of mediums that so clearly retell them. Yet more often then not, we don’t choose to present it that way. We also live in an age where post processing is incredibly powerful, easy to use and very available. These tools in hand, we create A/V masterpieces that highlight all of the accolades, cherry picks the journey and in my mind, just isn’t “real”.
I’m a fan and advocate of what’s real because I can relate to what’s real. I find joy and knowledge in an unembellished experience because I can connect with it. Why fluff the experience when the rock climbing experience is ridiculous enough.
I also know I’m not alone in this opinion. This project, “First Person Beta”, aims to deliver the climbing adventure as close to a human perspective as I can perform. I place a large value on the raw experience. This kind of footage has offered me technical beta, kept the psyche high and (maybe most importantly for myself) made the seemingly daunting accessible and possible. Simply put, this kind of footage has expanded my climbing universe.
I hope you can take away just as much!
